Grazyna Auguscik &
Paulinho Garcia
(Cover $5)

Singer, composer, arranger, and producer Grazyna Auguscik has won the praise and admiration of music critics,  jazz enthusiasts and even non-jazz audiences with a singular voice that speaks a universal language.

She is one of the most intriguing contemporary vocalists on today’s World jazz scene. Her elusive style challenges traditional definitions of jazz and show vocalist and musician without boundaries. Her unorthodox approach to rewriting classic works is at once a tribute to its authors as well as an adventure into uncharted territory. Her originals give a fresh taste of uncanny flavor.

Her professional music career She began in Europe, completed her studies in 1992 at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has since become a prolific collaborator sharing the stage with such jazz notables as Jim Hall, Michael and Randy Brecker, Bobby Enriquez, John Medeski, Paul Wertico, Kurt Rosenwinkel,  Robert Irving III, Michal Urbaniak, Terry Callier, Patricia Barber, Leni Stern, Eric Hochberg, John McLean,  David Onderdonk, Ernie Adams, Andrzej Jagodzinski, Jarek Bester and many others.

Amidst  her active schedule of performances in the U.S., Europe and Asia, Grazyna has managed to record, produce and distribute twelve albums, eight under her own record label, GMA Records, and appearing on as many projects as a guest.

Born in Belo Horizonte (capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil) Paulinho Garcia began his musical career at the age of nine as a singer in a Sunday children's program in his city's principal radio station, Radio Inconfidencia. In his teens, he performed as a house musician in all musical programs of the Radio network, Guarany--TV Itacolomy. He led his own band, Os Agitadores, and with them recorded his first two albums.

Until his arrival in the U.S. in 1979, Paulinho composed, arranged, produced, and performed jingles for HP Studios. Four of his commercials received national awards. Having moved to Chicago, he performed and recorded two albums with the band Made in Brazil. In 1991 he founded his own band, Jazzmineiro, whose eponymous 1996 CD received excellent reviews in the Chicago Tribune, Jazziz magazine, the Brazilian Music Review, and The Brazilians.

Paulinho was the recipient of the "Best jazz entertainer" award for the year 2001 by the Chicago Music Awards. His new recording "Homage", released in Tokyo on September 2002, was chosen as the best vocal CD in Japan for 2002 and was among the best 20 overall.

Paulinho has performed in many cities throughout the U.S. and abroad, touring Japan for six months with Made in Brazil. In 2000 and 2001 he toured Poland, Prague and Bratislava with singer Grazyna Auguscik. Paulinho also performed with saxophonist Greg Fishman (his partner in Two for Brazil). In 2001 they performed at the North Sea jazz festival in the Netherlands, the Singapore jazz festival and at the Holland American jazz cruise. In 2002 they performed in Hong Kong and Bangkok and most recently at the Fujitsu Concord jazz festival throughout various cities in Japan. It was then that Paulinho added Polish singer Grazyna Auguscik and named his new trio Three for Brazil. In 2003 Two for Brazil played Joe Siegel's jazz cruise "jazz party at sea" (October 26 thru November 2). His line up for 2004 included a tour of Poland in March, Bahamas in May, as well as performing at one of Japan's largest jazz festivals, Jazz Elite, with Three for Brazil (June 8th thru 21st), a second "jazz party at sea" cruise (October 23 thru 30th) and two TV concerts in the Netherlands in November. Chico, vocals and violin

FranklinChico” Welch has been a working composer and performer for over 25 years.  In the early years of his career he traveled extensively throughout the United States and Mexico singing and songwriting while honing his skills as a fiddle, mandolin and guitar player.  He drew from and expanded on his knowledge of R&B, Jazz, Country and Irish musical traditions, adding his own energy to each style.  While in Mexico he played in the Brujos Band, led by trumpeter Luis Gasca who is renowned for his work with Santana, Malo and Janis Joplin, among others.

In 1984 he settled in Chicago and continued his work as a street musician and Irish fiddle player. He originated the “Open Jam Session” at the Abbey Pub, which quickly became a tradition in the city. He did the same at Celtic Crossings.  In 1998 he recorded his first studio album, “Which Way to the Beach, Frank?”.  This album highlights Chico’s musical diversity, being influenced by Little Feat and Celtic rock.  Original compositions on this album include “Spoon River Reel” and “Gigi”.

In 1997 Chico began a partnership with drummer/guitarist Barry Capaul that became the Bucketboy Bluegrass Band.  Their enormously successful partnership drew large crowds each day in downtown Chicago.  The crowds repeatedly requested a CD of their work, and in 2000 they released “Live at Angel City”. This CD included another of Chico’s original compositions “Golden Eagle Rag”.

In recent years Chico has added Gypsy Jazz to his musical repertoire, forming the Econosize Swing Orchestra and the Tamarindo Trio. His work as a composer has yielded  a new cd of original compositions entitled “Tamarindo”.  Featuring the songs “Funky Butt”, “Django’s Shoes” , “ Burning Up the Dirt Road”  and  “City that Care Forgot” , the latter written in response to the crisis in New Orleans.

The Typhanie Monique Trio

Typhanie will be hosting a monthly jazz jam session for vocalists. Limited availability, sign up at Katerina’s the night of the session. Various musicians will be showcased.

Chicago’s next major jazz artist to take flight she affirmed that not all of today's jazz singers are content to dwell on saccharine love songs. In an eclectic assortment of originals and covers, Monique applied top-notch jazz singing to poetic social commentary.    Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Since 1998, Typhanie Monique has been a tour de force on the Chicago music scene as a vocalist, bandleader and songwriter. The soulful, honey-voiced chanteuse is one of Chicago’s hardest-working musicians. She has performed at every major venue in the Chicago club scene over the past 10 years, leading legendary groups such as SUMO, Peking Turtle, Mr. Egg Germ, Jive Council, Choral Thunder, the T. Monique Quartet and the Typhanie Monique & Neal Alger Duo.

Over the past four years, Typhanie has devoted herself to her primary passion – jazz–and has made her mark on the international jazz scene with longtime musical partner Neal Alger, one of Chicago’s finest improvising guitarists. Their creative synergy began in 2000 when Monique asked Alger to be a sideman in her jazz quartet and to occasionally take the lead guitar role with her original funk outfit Peking Turtle. Monique quickly realized the musical dynamic between herself and Alger in January 2003 when the two were invited to reside weekly at the highly acclaimed Pop’s for Champagne, where they fused and polished “Tymoneal” and held court for over 3 years. In 2004, Typhanie teamed with Alger to record her first jazz CD, Intrinsic (Blujazz Records). Intrinsic did more than just capture the duo’s organic, soul-infused flavor in an intimate studio setting; it received national radio play, got the attention of the press and landed them national touring opportunities.  2007 has been an incredible year thus far for Typhanie Monique. It began with a new CD, In This Room. Monique and Alger took a different approach with their second release, collaborating with world-class musicians such as Tom Kennedy (Dave Weckl Band), Ernie Adams (Al Di Meola) and Brazilian artist Paulinho Garcia.

This year alone, Typhanie has performed at the prestigious Chicago Jazz Festival, the Stevens Point Jazz Festival, and the Old Town School of Folk Music opening for jazz saxophonist Chris Potter. She has also toured the U.S. with Alger promoting their latest release.  In July 2007, Typhanie took flight on an international solo journey after being invited to teach and perform in Moscow, Russia. There, she played with some of Russia’s top jazz musicians including saxophonist Oleg Kireyev and pianist Vladimir Nesterenko and performed in Moscow’s top jazz clubs.

CD Release Party
Soul & Science - Volume 2

"[Saxophonist Chris Greene] has shown that pop, rock and R&B tunes can all exist on a jazz record because, stripped to their very core, they are all music. What a great discovery."
                                      –
All About Jazz

Chris Greene is determined to fight musical segregation. He is making a name for himself on the Chicago jazz circuit by attempting to fight the many stereotypes which accompany his beloved genre. Greene is the leader of a quartet of musicians, called The Chris Greene Quartet, who want people to know that jazz is not for old people, and it doesn't have to stand in stark contrast to popular music. His is a form of jazz which embraces youthful energy and pop accessibility. Audiences do not feel forced to passively sit and play it cool while Greene does his thing, detached from the crowd. He and his band of highly-touted musicians - Damian Espinosa on piano, Marc Piane on acoustic bass, and Tyrone Blair on drums - are committed to connecting with their audience each and every night.

Greene's lifelong willingness to fully embrace pop music while holding true to the roots of jazz has distinguished him for as long as he can remember. Greene was one of the rare teenagers who played in the school band and had time for both John Coltrane and Michael Jackson. He made sure that he didn't isolate himself during the storied MTV years of the mid-1980's. He learned very early in life that some of the best jazz is made by people who know the rules inside and out, and are more than willing to break them. As with all genres of music, people are quick to try to place jazz in a box. As with all genres of music, there are people who are willing to think outside of that box. Greene has always found himself drawn to these people. It is now no surprise that he is considered in high regard as a saxophonist who encourages his band to blend blues, gospel, and funk into what they are doing.

Paulinho Garcia and Greg Fishman

Greg Fishman in from Arizona!

Paulinho & Greg together again!

Like destiny, Two For Brazil started from a tribute concert for two of Brazilian music greatest names: Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz.

Chicago Cultural Center’s Peter McDowell called on Paulinho to play a tribute to Jobim and on Greg to play a tribute to Getz whose birthdays are very close. Even though they have never played together the concert went very well and the idea of recording and performing together was a natural consequence. The name Two For Brazil came from the fact that most Brazilian music is written in 2/4 and that we are a duo dedicated to Brazilian musical format.

“The artful, gently-swinging duo of Chicago-based Greg Fishman (sax) and Paulinho Garcia (guitar, vocals—aka Two for Brazil—doing Jobim and jazz standards with class and swing. “O Grande Amor.” Indeed.”
